IMG’s Move to Create Championship Tournaments Scrutinized

IMG, the sports marketing conglomerate plans to step into the high school sports tournament business by launching a series of national championship events at its Bradenton, Florida, training academy, a 350-acre training facility. The company is also staging a series of national training and competitions for high school athletes.

This latest move is in in partnership with the National High School Coaches Association. Preliminary plans are to stage events in boys’ and girls’ tennis, golf and lacrosse and 7-on-7 football this summer and, eventually stage championships in 20 sports.

The move, however, has been scrutinized by critics concerned about the effect of extracurricular activities on youth, and the over commercialization of high school athletics. Read the entire story.
