Grand Park Sports Campus selects company to lead proposed ice hockey facility development

The City of Westfield in Indiana has selected Nicholas Family of Companies to lead the development of a new ice hockey facility in the Grand Park District, pending final contract negotiations. The proposed complex, located at the northwest corner of Grand Park Boulevard and John Dippel Boulevard, will initially feature three ice sheets with potential expansion to four. Designed as a winter anchor, the facility aims to complement Grand Park’s seasonal offerings, attract tournaments, and provide local programming including youth leagues, classes, and public skating to foster athlete development.

Mayor Scott Willis emphasized that the facility would help transform Grand Park into a true 365-day destination, generating year-round visits for hotels, restaurants, and retail. A June 2025 Hunden Partners study projects the Hamilton County-based arena could produce nearly $498 million in new spending, $220 million in earnings, more than 105 new full-time jobs, and $8.7 million in county hotel taxes over 30 years.

Nicholas Family of Companies brings a hands-on, family-led approach with experience in similar ice facilities, prioritizing design, construction, and operations under a single accountable team. The Westfield Redevelopment Commission anticipates beginning design and predevelopment in April, with the arena slated to open in 2028.

Vanderbilt University reveals $300 million athletics expansion in Tennessee

Vanderbilt University has unveiled plans for a sweeping $300 million athletics expansion, highlighted by a new soccer and lacrosse stadium as part of its Vandy United initiative. The project builds on recent momentum, including the women’s soccer program’s SEC Tournament success, and aligns with the university’s “Anchored for Her” commitment to elevating women’s sports through dedicated investment and resources.

Beyond competition venues, the development introduces a comprehensive athletics hub featuring training, recovery and administrative space, along with a new football experience center and indoor practice facility. The Lummis Family Tennis Center will also see expanded indoor courts, enhancing year-round access for student-athletes.

The plan extends into the campus experience, with a reimagined Jess Neely Drive designed as a pedestrian-friendly corridor with retail and food options. Officials say the investment positions Vanderbilt to deliver championship-caliber facilities while strengthening community engagement and long-term program growth.

Sports complex in LaGrange, Georgia, finally has its ribbon-cutting ceremony

Local leaders and community members gathered recently to formally dedicate the Tod A. The complex features updated athletic fields, a brand-new inclusive playground, and amenities designed to support youth and community sports programs. Patrick Crews, Chairman of the Troup County Board of Commissioners, highlighted the project as a testament to local leadership and partnership, while officials and community members praised Tod Tentler’s lasting impact on county recreation and development.

NFL’s Texans announce Toro District to be built in northwest Houston

California town proposes new arena to become a year-round sports hub

Big Bear Lake is set to become a year-round hub for sports and entertainment with the proposed IDM Arena, a multi-use venue and training complex announced by IDM and the Skate Board Association. The project aims to elevate the Southern California mountain town as a destination for skate culture, athlete development, and large-scale events, complementing its existing four-season recreation offerings including skiing, mountain biking, and lake activities.

The IDM Arena will feature indoor facilities for skateboarding, basketball, volleyball, tennis, pickleball, esports, and live concerts, alongside training spaces, youth programs, retail, hospitality, and media studios. Visit Big Bear CEO Travis Scott highlighted the town’s 6,752-foot elevation as ideal for endurance training and performance development, positioning the complex to attract competitions, training camps, and athletes from across the region.

Developed in partnership with Cooperative LA, Populous, and Aambé, the arena is designed as a long-term home for community engagement, cultural programming, and sports education. While an opening date has yet to be announced, the project signals Big Bear’s potential evolution from a seasonal getaway into a year-round destination for athletics, entertainment, and tourism.

Another mall is set to become a thriving sports complex

Staying with California, Citrus Heights City Council is set to consider a proposal for a major new sports and entertainment destination at Sunrise Mall, marking a key step in advancing redevelopment plans for the site. The 160,000-square-foot Sunrise Sports Center would be developed by The Mettle Shop as part of a broader vision to transform the area into a regional activity hub.

Plans call for a 4,000-seat arena anchored by two NHL-sized ice sheets, supporting hockey, figure skating, curling and public programming. The facility would also feature expansive indoor turf space, allowing for sports such as soccer, lacrosse and football, along with 17,000 square feet of medical and performance space.

Designed as a year-round venue, the complex would host tournaments, concerts and community events while drawing an estimated 1.29 million visitors annually. City leaders say the project could serve as a catalyst for economic growth, tourism and long-term community engagement.
